2007-2008 SEASON
Charlotte, NC--- Carolinas Concert Association
is bringing you the world of performing arts in 2007-2008 by presenting
premier international orchestras, musicians and dancers!
Bergen Philharmonic
Andrew Litton, Principal Conductor & Music Director
Featuring Andre Watts, Piano
Monday, November 19, 2007 at 8pm
Established in 1765, the Bergen Philharmonic
is one of the oldest orchestras in the world. It shares the title of
Norwegian National Symphony Orchestra with the Oslo Philharmonic. The
Orchestra has an active recording and touring schedule, and has performed in
Japan, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, Czech
Republic, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and major cities throughout Scandinavia.
Since Fall 2003, Andrew Litton has been the orchestra’s Principal
Conductor. In Spring 2005 he was designated as the first American to hold
the position of Music Director with the Bergen Philharmonic. The orchestra’s
2007 US tour will be their first in this country and will feature piano
soloist Andre Watts.
Frederica von Stade, Mezzo-soprano and Samuel
Ramey, Bass

Frederica von Stade, Mezzo-soprano
One of the most beloved musical figures of our
time, Frederica von Stade has enriched the world of classical music for
three decades with her appearances in opera, concert, and recital. The
mezzo-soprano is well known to audiences around the world, has made over
sixty recordings and has garnered six Grammy nominations. In 1983, Miss von
Stade was honored with an award given at The White House by President Reagan
in recognition of her significant contribution to the arts.
Samuel Ramey, Bass
For almost three decades, Samuel Ramey has
reigned as one of the music world’s foremost interpreters of bass and
bass-baritone operatic and concert repertoire. He commands an impressive
range encompassing virtually every musical style. Mr. Ramey’s
interpretations embrace the bel canto of Bellini, Rossini, and Donizetti;
and the heroic roles of the Russian and French repertoire.
State Symphony Orchestra of Mexico
Maestro Enrique Batiz, Music Director
Featuring Alfonso Moreno, Guitar

In 1971, under the initiative of Enrique Bátiz
and the Mexican government, the Symphonic Orchestra of Mexico was founded.
The stated purpose of the Orchestra was to spread music as an art and as a
way to create unity and pride among the citizens of Mexico. Through the
thirty-three years of its existence, the State Symphony Orchestra of Mexico
has hosted innumerable guest directors and soloists chosen from the most
outstanding in the world. Both the orchestra and its artistic director have
repeatedly received the Annual Award from the Mexican Union of Chroniclers
of Theater and Music. This Orchestra has toured throughout Europe with
extraordinary success, as well as traveling to the Republic of China
performing in Changsha, Shanghai, Shenyang, Harbin and Beijing.
St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre

The St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre occupies a
very special place among the ballet theatres of the world. The younger
brother of the Kirov and the Bolshoi Ballet Theatre, the St. Petersburg
Ballet Theatre was born over a quarter-century ago. One of the most
distinguished classical companies in Russia, the St. Petersburg Ballet
Theatre has become one of the country’s most prolific international touring
ballet ensembles, dancing a wide range of Classical and Modern repertoire.
Current Artistic Director Yuri Petukhov continues this tradition with highly
acclaimed performances in Russia and around the world. During their trip to
Charlotte, the St. Petersburg Ballet Theatre will be performing Georges
Bizet’s “Carmen.”
Chanticleer
Choral Ensemble

Hailed by the New Yorker magazine as
“America’s favorite choral ensemble” and praised by the Los Angeles Times
for its “luxurious perfection,” the Grammy Award-winning vocal ensemble
Chanticleer has developed a remarkable reputation for its vivid
interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz, and from
gospel to venturesome new music. With its seamless blend of twelve male
voices, ranging from countertenor to bass, the ensemble has earned
international renown as “an orchestra of voices.” Chanticleer’s
long-standing commitment to developing the choral repertoire has led the
group to commission works from an ever-growing list of important composers,
including Chen Yi, David Conte, Brent Michael Davids, Anthony Davis, Guido
López-Gavilán, William Hawley, Tania León, Jaakko Mäntyjärvi, John Musto,
Bernard Rands, Steven Sametz, Carlos Sanchez-Guttierez, Paul Schoenfield,
Steven Stucky and Augusta Read Thomas.
All performances are in the Belk Theater of
the NC Blumenthal Performing Arts Center. Season tickets ($95-$295) or Flex
